Premier League giants set to clash in groundbreaking Lionel Messi tribute tournament

Chelsea and Manchester City’s youth squads are set to join the first-ever Lionel Messi Cup, a new international Under-16 football tournament scheduled for December in the United States. This competition will bring together eight teams from across the globe, with the event hosted at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium and training complex.

Among the invited clubs are Barcelona and Newell’s Old Boys, both former teams of Lionel Messi, alongside his current club, Inter Miami. The lineup also includes Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan, and River Plate, underlining the tournament’s diverse and prestigious character. The inclusion of these respected football academies emphasizes the significance of the event in the youth football calendar.

The Messi Cup is designed to showcase emerging football talent, with matches running from December 9 to December 14. Fixtures will take place at various Inter Miami facilities, culminating in the final and closing ceremony at Chase Stadium. Organizers have also planned an opening ceremony and several off-pitch activities intended to foster cultural and sporting exchanges among participants.

Lionel Messi himself is expected to attend the competition. Announcing the event on Instagram, he said: “Thrilled to finally share this with you. This December, Miami will host a very special youth football tournament featuring some of the top clubs from around the world. The future of the game will be on full display, and it’s more than just matches – we’ve got an incredible few days planned with lots of other exciting activities. This is about the next generation. Hope you like it!”

In addition to the matches, the tournament will feature an industry summit. The Messi Cup website describes this gathering: “The leading minds in business, design, creativity and culture will be hosted at the Faena Forum.” This summit is intended to bring together experts and innovators from a range of disciplines to discuss the future of sport and youth development.

Messi’s media company, 525 Rosario, is behind the promotion of the event. In a statement, they said: “The Messi Cup is where today’s game meets tomorrow’s players. It is an opportunity to celebrate talent, culture, and community, while creating legacies and bonds that will endure well beyond the pitch.” This reflects the wider ambition of the tournament to inspire and connect the next generation of footballers.

The full schedule for the Lionel Messi Cup begins with the opening ceremony and initial matches from December 9 to December 11 at Chase Stadium and the Inter Miami training fields. The industry summit is scheduled for December 12 at the Faena Forum, followed by further matches and the competition’s final on December 14. The tournament aims to become a recurring highlight for youth football and a platform for young athletes to shine.
