Hamilton Accies rocked by shock insolvency threat as club faces winding-up order

Hamilton Academical Football Club is facing a fresh and severe financial threat as a petition to wind up the club has been filed at Airdrie Sheriff Court. The notice, dated August 4, was published in the Edinburgh Gazette, a platform for public legal notices, and names Total Energies Gas and Power Limited as the petitioner, suggesting the club owes a significant debt.

According to the court documents, Hamilton Academical has just eight days from the date of the notice to provide reasons why the winding-up order should not proceed. The official statement reads: “Notice is hereby given that on Monday 04 August 2025, a petition was presented to Livingston at Airdrie Sheriff Court at Graham Street, Airdrie, ML6 6EE by Total Energies Gas and Power Limited, Bridge Gate, 55-57 High Street, Redhill, Surrey, RH11 1RX (the petitioner) craving the court inter alia for an order under the Insolvency Act 1986 to wind up Hamilton Academical Football Club Limited…”

The petition details the club’s registered address at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld and was signed by James McBride of Clyde and Co (Scotland) LLP, acting as the legal representative for the creditor. The court’s interlocutor instructs that the notice must be publicly advertised and gives the club, or any interested parties, eight days to respond.

This legal escalation compounds the club’s troubles. Recently, Hamilton Academical suffered a 15-point deduction, which resulted in relegation from the Championship. The Scottish club has also been operating under a transfer embargo, both sanctions stemming from its failure to meet tax obligations to HM Revenue and Customs.

When contacted by local media, a spokesperson for Hamilton Academical said the club had no prior knowledge of the winding-up notice before its publication. They declined to make any further comment until they could investigate the matter fully.

The coming days will be crucial as the club faces the possibility of being dissolved unless it can address the issues raised in the petition or negotiate a settlement with its creditor. The situation remains tense as supporters and staff await further developments.
