Marcus Rashford and Lamine Yamal’s secret texts exposed: Barcelona locker room rocked by signing revelations

Marcus Rashford had been in secret communication with Lamine Yamal and several Barcelona players for months before his much-discussed transfer to the Spanish giants. The 27-year-old forward was finally revealed as the newest member of Hansi Flick’s talented squad on Wednesday, following persistent rumors about his future.

Rashford, visibly pleased while holding his new No. 14 shirt, said he was inspired by Thierry Henry and expressed excitement about joining the LaLiga champions. “It will be a joy to play for this football club,” he told reporters, making it clear he was eager for the challenge ahead.

His intention to leave Manchester United was already apparent as early as January, when then-manager Ruben Amorim suggested he seek opportunities elsewhere. Talks between Rashford’s representatives and Barcelona’s leadership reportedly took place in Lisbon, but an agreement was stalled by Barcelona’s salary constraints, according to The Athletic.

Despite a temporary move to Aston Villa at the end of the winter transfer window, Rashford’s desire to join Barcelona became public. When asked in June by influencer Javi Ruiz if he wanted to play with Lamine Yamal, Rashford replied, “Of course I’d love to. Everyone wants to play with the best.” It has since come out that Rashford and Yamal had been exchanging messages, and the Barcelona squad was fully aware of his enthusiasm to join.

The long-awaited deal finally materialized this week, with Rashford signing a season-long loan and Barcelona securing a £30 million option to make the move permanent next summer. His arrival was reportedly met with enthusiasm in the dressing room. A source told The Athletic: “If you see the pure raw skill set he has… boof, it is top class, top class. But here he will have to run. I don’t know what went wrong at Manchester United, but if you are a striker and don’t run off the ball and when the team are counter-pressing, you are done here.”

At his official presentation, Rashford said, “It was not difficult” to decide when Barcelona showed interest. “I was clear on my preference from the very beginning. Actually maybe from January, but it didn’t work out in January so I went to Aston Villa and I enjoyed a good period there. The summer came around quickly and again it was time to make another decision. My choice was easy. One, it’s a family club, something I am used to from my past. It feels like home, I feel like I’ve made the right decision. I am excited to get going and play the first game and play in front of the fans. To play for this football club is a special moment for me and I’m ready to get going.”

Although there was speculation that Rashford might have stayed at Manchester United if the Spanish transfer had not gone through, his strained relationship with Ruben Amorim, especially after disagreements over training performances before Christmas, made a return unlikely.

When questioned about Manchester United, Rashford remained diplomatic: “The situation with [Manchester] United – the club is in a period of change and they have been for a while. I don’t have anything bad to say about Man United. It’s been an important part of not only my career but my life, and I’m very grateful for the opportunity to play for them. But football is the same as life, and not everything goes as simple as you may think. This is my next step, my next chapter, and I’m fully focused on this and trying to improve myself and help the team win trophies. I don’t have anything to say about United, I hope they are successful in the future. I’m focused here and I’m ready to play and experience this club.”

Rashford now faces fierce competition in Barcelona’s attacking lineup, contending with stars like Raphinha, Robert Lewandowski, and Lamine Yamal for a starting spot. Last season, Yamal made 35 league appearances, scoring nine times and assisting 15 goals, while Raphinha contributed 18 goals and 11 assists. By comparison, Rashford tallied six goals and four assists in 25 Premier League matches split between Aston Villa and Manchester United.
