Rangers transfer soap opera explodes as Robin Propper’s mega-money move rumors crash down

FC Twente are on the verge of bringing back Robin Propper, just a year after the Dutch defender left for Rangers. Propper, who was transferred for £1.5 million last summer, struggled to find his footing among the Ibrox faithful, despite accumulating 39 appearances across all competitions. Twente have made no secret of their determination to secure Propper’s return, especially after he featured for 45 minutes in Russell Martin’s first match in charge—a 2-2 draw against Club Brugge.

Efforts were initially made to complete the deal in time for Propper to join Twente’s pre-season camp in Austria. According to Dutch outlet Tubantia, via TwenteInsite, negotiations have now reached their final stages, with the transfer expected to conclude imminently. Propper, originally from Arnhem, is set to sign a three-year contract upon his arrival back in Enschede.

Meanwhile, Westerlo have addressed speculation surrounding Matija Frigan, a striker who has attracted interest from Rangers and several English clubs. Frigan, previously linked to a potential move to England’s Hull City, has seen his future clouded by the Tigers’ financial difficulties. Although Hull are currently under a transfer embargo that extends until January 2027, there have been suggestions of a potential workaround, with reports indicating a £7.7 million agreement to bring Frigan to the MKM Stadium.

Westerlo, however, remain firm in their stance. The club has recently signed Nacho Ferri on loan from Eintracht Frankfurt, but vice-president Hasan Cetinkaya has downplayed the notion that Ferri’s arrival means Frigan’s departure is imminent. Cetinkaya told Gazet van Antwerpen: “He wasn’t brought in to fill the void in case Frigan leaves. These two players complement each other. Last season, we played with [ex-Leicester, Newcastle and Sporting Lisbon giant Islam] Slimani and Frigan and it went well. Nacho is tall and fast. He will be a big factor in [scaring] opposing defences.”

On the coaching side, Westerlo manager Issame Charai, once an assistant at Rangers, echoed the sentiment, stating: “For now, as a coach, I have three good strikers at my disposal. Matija Frigan, Nacho Ferri, and don’t forget Kyan Vaesen. This will help the club’s ambition.”

As transfer negotiations continue to swirl, both FC Twente and Westerlo are making decisive moves to shape their squads ahead of the upcoming season, with returning faces and steadfast leadership playing central roles in their plans.
