Xabi Alonso stuns fans by benching Real Madrid ace Rodrygo after Arsenal target price drama

Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso has dismissed speculation surrounding Rodrygo’s future at the club following the Brazilian’s omission from their Club World Cup match against Pachuca. Despite the team’s 3-1 victory, Rodrygo was kept on the bench, intensifying rumors of his potential departure, especially after he had provided an assist in their previous game against Al-Hilal.

Earlier in the season, Rodrygo reportedly told Real Madrid he no longer wished to play for the club and chose to sit out their high-profile El Clasico clash with Barcelona in May. His frustrations grew as he found himself behind big names like Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr, and Jude Bellingham, resulting in reduced minutes under former coach Carlo Ancelotti.

However, since Alonso took charge, there have been indications that Rodrygo could revive his status at the Bernabeu, with reports suggesting he has made a positive impression during training sessions. Despite this, doubts persist, especially after Alonso labeled his recent benching as a “technical” decision, fueling further speculation about a summer transfer.

Real Madrid has reportedly set a €90 million asking price for Rodrygo, with Arsenal emerging as one of the main contenders for his signature. According to Cadena SER, there is “a real possibility” the Gunners will pursue a deal, but the move remains uncertain. Alonso has tried to quell the rumors, stating, “He looks good to me, enthusiastic. The other day was a technical decision. He remains important and we will need him in the Club World Cup. He is a special player and he will have a significant role.”

When questioned about whether the potential signing of Franco Mastantuono from River Plate could impact Rodrygo’s position, Alonso responded, “I’m very happy with everyone, and I’m counting on everyone. It’s a very demanding season; we’ll have 50 or 60 games. We need a squad with healthy competition. I’m happy.”

Should Rodrygo decide to leave, sources suggest he might consider options beyond Arsenal, with Manchester City also expressing interest. Any possible transfer would likely occur in August, as the player remains focused on Real Madrid’s Club World Cup campaign.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano previously noted that Arsenal “love” Rodrygo, but the club is unlikely to make a formal bid until the forward communicates his intention to leave Real Madrid. Arsenal’s struggle for goals last season, with Kai Havertz finishing as their top Premier League scorer on just nine goals, has increased their urgency to reinforce their attack ahead of the new campaign.
