New Rangers boss Kevin Thelwell hints at the timeline for unveiling the club’s next manager
Kevin Thelwell, Rangers’ new sporting director, is focused on appointing a new head coach within days. After starting his role at Auchenhowie, Thelwell emphasized the urgency in finding a replacement for Philippe Clement, with candidates like Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin being considered.
This move comes after a significant change in the club’s ownership, with American businessman Andrew Cavenagh and the San Francisco 49ers taking control. Thelwell, alongside new technical director Dan Purdy, aims to bring fresh leadership to the team, prioritizing a swift appointment for the managerial position.
Thelwell acknowledged the groundwork laid before his tenure, stating that efforts to find a new coach will now accelerate. “While there has been significant work going on in the background prior to my arrival, that naturally accelerates from today,“ he commented.
His goal aligns with the club’s broader strategy to bridge the gap with rivals Celtic, backed by a financial injection of £20 million for the upcoming summer. Thelwell is keen on driving success and ensuring the club’s progress is both rapid and sustainable.
The new leadership team also includes Belgian recruitment specialist Nils Koppen’s successor, Dan Purdy, who will collaborate with Thelwell to enhance the club’s performance. Together, they are tasked with implementing strategic changes to strengthen Rangers’ standing.
On his first day, Thelwell addressed supporters, expressing his commitment to winning. “It’s a great honour to be joining Rangers, particularly at such an exciting moment in the club’s history. This is a new chapter for Rangers and while we recognise success won’t come easy, our goal is clear – we need to win,” he stated.
