Liverpool eyeing surprise return of £52m former player as crucial squad member departs

Reports indicate that Liverpool may activate a buy-back clause for Jarell Quansah following the expected departure of Ibrahima Konate from the club. The defensive setup at Anfield faces significant changes in the coming months as multiple players approach uncertain futures.

Liverpool secured Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for a £60 million package, making him their second-most expensive defender of all time. However, Jacquet will complete the remainder of the season on loan at the French club before arriving at Anfield. The acquisition signals potential squad restructuring in the defensive line.

Konate’s contract expires at the end of the season, positioning him to become a free agent. Several elite European clubs have expressed interest in acquiring the 26-year-old defender, who has attracted attention from Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, and Barcelona. His status as a top-tier centre-back makes him an attractive option despite recent injury concerns.

Quansah departed Liverpool in June for approximately £35 million to join Bayer Leverkusen. The club retained a buy-back clause valued around £52 million, which can be activated from 2027 onwards. The England international has accumulated over 2,000 minutes of playing time this season in Germany and has scored two goals in 26 appearances across all competitions.

Analysts suggest Quansah’s return remains a genuine possibility. Similar precedents exist in football, with players developing abroad before returning to their original clubs. The prospect of recalling a young defender who has gained European experience appeals as a potential long-term solution alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool’s defensive depth appears insufficient with only Van Dijk and Konate currently available as a functional pairing. Giovanni Leoni’s recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury remains ongoing, limiting immediate options. The club requires additional centre-back recruitment this summer to avoid overreliance on aging or injury-prone players.

The expected departure of Konate eliminates one experienced defender from the squad. With Jacquet initially unavailable and younger players requiring development time, Liverpool faces pressure to identify a replacement capable of immediate impact alongside Van Dijk during the 2026-27 season.
