David Datro Fofana reveals what Celtic must do to finally secure his signature after rejection
Celtic has revived its pursuit of David Datro Fofana following his impressive performance in Turkey, where the Chelsea striker has demonstrated his scoring ability. The 22-year-old has netted seven times across fourteen matches during his loan spell at Fatih Karagümrük in the Turkish Super Lig, attracting fresh attention from Scottish football’s elite.
Fofana’s journey since joining Chelsea in 2022 has been marked by struggle. Originally signed from Molde, he has been unable to establish himself at Stamford Bridge. Multiple loan moves to Union Berlin, Burnley, and Goztepe preceded his current Turkish assignment, suggesting the player has yet to find his natural home in top-tier football.
The striker was briefly on Celtic’s radar during the previous summer transfer window when other transfer targets fell through. However, Fofana chose to remain in England at that time, accepting a loan opportunity with Charlton that ultimately did not materialize. He was subsequently sent to Turkey instead, where circumstances have shifted dramatically in his favor.
Speaking recently about his approach to the upcoming transfer window, Fofana emphasized maturity and stability over rushed decisions. He articulated that his priority centers on performing consistently and allowing his football to demonstrate his capabilities. For his next destination, he seeks a project combining trust, regular playing opportunities, and genuine sporting ambition where he can develop meaningfully.
Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has acknowledged the club’s requirement for attacking reinforcements as they compete for the Scottish title. Mohamed Bamba from Lorient represents a potential loan target with a purchase option, though an injury situation at the French club may complicate that pursuit. Additionally, Croatian forward Franko Kovacevic remains under consideration, though NK Celje currently values him at approximately £2.5 million without receiving formal offers.
