Charlie Mulgrew’s unexpected Hearts move leaves Celtic fans questioning what comes next for the former captain

Charlie Mulgrew, a former Celtic player, has expressed growing concerns about his earlier prediction that Hearts would finish significantly behind Celtic in the Scottish Premiership title race. Mulgrew predicted Hearts would trail by eight points by March, yet the club currently sits at the summit, six points clear of Celtic.

Hearts manager Derek McInnes has overseen an impressive run of victories against Celtic, Falkirk, and Rangers in recent matches. Meanwhile, Celtic’s new manager Wilfried Nancy is still finding his footing, having won only one match since taking charge against Aberdeen after suffering four initial defeats. The contrasting form has shifted the league landscape dramatically.

During a podcast discussion, Mulgrew accepted a wager from former midfielder Kevin Thomson. If Hearts win the league, Mulgrew agreed to celebrate in Gorgie, the Hearts neighborhood, acknowledging the unlikely nature of his original stance. He admitted he now feels genuinely nervous about his previous dismissive assessment of the Edinburgh side’s title credentials.

Mulgrew attributed Hearts’ current success to their attacking quality, specifically praising striker Lawrence Shankland’s performances. He emphasized that confident attacking play separates title contenders from rivals. According to Mulgrew, Hearts possess collective belief in their defensive organization, set-piece execution, and goalkeeper’s ability to make crucial saves, creating a unified team mentality.

However, Mulgrew questioned whether Hearts can sustain their challenge through the full season. He highlighted upcoming difficult matches, including a trip to Hibernian at Easter Road, as tests of their resilience and mental strength. He remains uncertain if Hearts possess the mentality to maintain their position when facing consistent pressure from established rivals throughout the remainder of the campaign.
