Everton: He may leave in January and Tottenham shows interest
Ben Godfrey’s time at Everton appears to be coming to an end as football.london reports that the club is prepared to let the 25-year-old defender go in the upcoming January transfer window. This development comes just over three years after his £20million move from Norwich.
Newcastle, Tottenham, and Rangers have all shown interest in acquiring Godfrey’s services according to a report by 90min on November 8th. However, it seems unlikely that he will join any of these clubs due to various reasons including financial constraints and better options available for those teams.
Godfrey has had a challenging season with only one minute of Premier League playtime, which was during a match against Sheffield United back in September. It’s evident that manager Sean Dyche does not see him fitting into the team’s defensive strategy, having improved Everton’s defense significantly since his arrival.
The list of clubs reportedly interested in Godfrey is surprising given his lack of game time at Everton, who are currently battling relegation. Spurs and Newcastle likely have their sights set on players who are getting regular minutes elsewhere while Rangers might struggle to meet both Everton’s asking price and Godfrey’s wage demands.
If Godfrey were to leave in January, it would probably be for a mid-table Premier League side rather than a direct competitor for survival. Clubs like Brentford or West Ham could be potential destinations if they express interest in securing his signature.
