Celtic face fresh uncertainty over Mateusz Bogusz transfer as Louis Munteanu’s price tag is finally revealed

Celtic faces renewed interest in acquiring Polish midfielder Mateusz Bogusz, who appears increasingly motivated to depart his current club Cruz Azul. The 24-year-old previously came close to joining Celtic in summer 2024 when discussions centered on a potential £9million transfer, though the Scottish club ultimately opted to sign Arne Engels for £11million instead.

Bogusz transferred to the Mexican outfit from LAFC in Major League Soccer earlier this year, where he had faced new Celtic manager Wilfried Nancy during competition. However, his time in Mexico City has proven disappointing, with limited playing opportunities. He has contributed three goals across 38 appearances for Cruz Azul while recently spending consecutive matches on the bench as an unused substitute.

Recent incidents suggest Bogusz’s frustration is mounting. Following Cruz Azul’s Apertura playoff elimination against Tigres on Sunday, the midfielder reportedly left the tunnel while teammates acknowledged their travelling fans. Such conduct indicates his desire for an immediate exit from the club intensifying substantially.

Separately, CFR Cluj chairman Iuliu Mureșan has publicly disclosed the club’s willingness to part with striker Louis Munteanu for €10million, equivalent to approximately £8.7million. Celtic previously submitted a rejected £6.9million offer for the Romanian international last summer. Mureșan acknowledged mismanagement surrounding the player’s situation while emphasizing that improved attitude and conduct would facilitate any transfer occurring at appropriate compensation levels.

Mureșan stressed that CFR Cluj operates under financial constraints compared to rival European institutions, noting revenue shortfalls from ticketing, marketing operations, and merchandise sales. He acknowledged owner Neluțu Varga’s significant contributions to the club’s five championship titles through substantial investment commitments.
